With ESSE - master stove maker since 1854 - you have the choice of having dedicated woodburning stoves, or wood-fired cooking stoves (the Ironheart range). Modern ESSE stoves are compatible for use in Clean Air Zones as ‘DEFRA exempt appliances’* and they are Eco-Design Ready** to meet the new 2022 requirements.

DEFRA is the UK government's Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and in relation to wood stoves and multifuel stoves is concerned with smoke emissions in accordance with the Clean Air Act 1993. A DEFRA exempt stove is a wood stove suitable for the burning of wood in smoke-controlled areas. 

**ECO-DESIGN READY

The Eco-Design regulations will set new efficiency requirements that all stoves be designed to lower emissions and improve the UK's air quality. Only stoves that have been tested and approved will be sold and installed within the UK after 2022. Each stove will benefit from at least 80% efficiency which means you will be saving on fuel and helping improve our air quality at the same time.
